"My job is to hook the reader right away. If I hook the reader, then I can do whatever I want," says novelist and memoirist Donna Freitas.

A hook is key to writing a commercially viable book. It grabs a reader's attention and immediately engages them in your story.

If you're writing a novel or memoir, does your story begin in the middle of the action?

If you're writing nonfiction, does it open with a story, quote, statistic, new research, etc. that demands a reader's attention?

Like Donna says, you have to open your book with a strong hook. Only then can you 'hold' your reader. Watch the video to learn more.
